started to agree. so, we'll show you what's going on with this. we've had a split flow in the jet stream. we've had a northern jet and a southern jet. this has been small nuisancemakers and storms, running through the country, as long as this continues to happen. but what begins to happen is those two positions start to phase together. let me get back to the graphic. i want to show you -- max, will you run that through? to the eastern side. here's what happens. these two lows that are right now, really far apart, get really close in sync and phase off the eastern seaboard. where this happens depends who gets snow and who gets rain. but no matter where it happens, it's going to happen from the carolinas towards probably boston. wherever this happens, there's a lot of snow with this storm and southern rain. there will be mixing, as well. as far as exact totals, we're not going to do that tonight into tomorrow. but here's what we're looking at right now. buffalo, albany, 6 to 12-inch snowfalls. new york, 3 to 6 for that area. philly, you're involved in this. we're getting a little bit less.

1 to 3. boston, 12 to 24 inches of snow. some places in maine, two feet of snow. that's the way it looks right now. we have hours to put this storm together. they're really far apart right now. but we wanted to give the heads up to everybody that friday into saturday, we are expecting a big snowmaker. >> we'll be checking back with you, sam. let's turn to josh for the other stories of the morning. josh, good morning. >> good morning to you and all of you. we're going to begin with a big announcement from the postal service. it's ending mail delivery on saturdays. the move will save some $2 billion per year. however, saturday package deliveries will continue. and a powerful earthquake triggered a tsunami in the south pacific overnight. the magnitude 8 quake, centered in the solomon islands. dozens of homes are believed to be damaged. a new revelation on the war on terror. a location of a secret cia base has been revealed this morning. adding to whether the controversial drone program is

going too far. published reports say that the base in saudi arabia has been used to launch drone strikes against targets in yemen, including the one that killed american citizen and suspected terrorist, anwar al awlaki. a leaked memo from the obama administration claims u.s. citizens accused of being al qaeda operatives may lawfully be killed, even if there's no evidence of an imminent threat. meanwhile, john brennan, the president's nominee for cia director, will face tough questions about that memo in his confirmation hearing tomorrow. and computer hackers have struck the federal reserve. the hacker group, anonymous, claims to have stolen data belongs to some 4,000 bankers. the fed spokeswoman tells "the wall street journal," no critical operations have been affected. and it's being called the largest credit card fraud in history. authorities arrested 18 people based in new jersey, accused of stealing some $200 million after creating thousands of fake i.d.s, with stolen social security numbers. using those fake i.d.s to obtain

cards, the suspects allegedly wired money to seven countries, including pakistan and china. and abc news has learned that lance armstrong is the target of an active criminal investigation. federal agents are looking into possible obstruction of justice and witness tampering charges. today is the deadline for him to come clean, under oath, to anti-doping authorities if he wants his lifetime ban from sports reduced. a wild scene in florida this morning. we saw it at the top of the show. two people trapped inside the truck you see dangling off the side of a highway overpass in ft. lauderdale after it crashed. crews used a rope to secure the truck. brought in a tow truck to pull it in back off that ledge. a firefighter on a ladder helped secure everyone. one victim has been rushed to the hospital. no word on the condition of the driver. finally, a whale of a story. actually, two of them. first, an american tourist off the coast of mexico got the

surprise of his young life. take a look at that. >> oh. >> as a whale breached just beneath her boat and nearly jumped completely out of the water. nobody was hurt. everybody was absolutely stunned. and then, a couple canoeing in hawaii, treated to a very special sight. look at this. a humpback up for a visit, to say hello. not the same whale, by the way. everybody shocked. everybody okay. >> incredible photo. >> it is. >> thanks very much. we get the latest on little ethan, as he celebrates his sixth birthday at home today. we're learning details of the daring fbi raid on the underground bunker. gio benitez is in midland city, alabama. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning, george. these details are riveting. we were shocked to learn that just feet away from us, from all of the reporters, law enforcement officers were training to take out their suspect. abc news has learned bomb technicians have found two

homemade explosives where the little boy named ethan was being held. one inside this homemade bunker. another inside this white ventilation pipe negotiators were using to communicate with hostage taker, jimmy lee dykes. new photos show the entrance to the makeshift underground cell. sources say this is where the raid went down monday, after negotiators convinced dykes to approach the bunker hatch around 3:00 p.m. police knew he was armed. but sources now say dykes had also fortified the door. fbi agents quickly set off an explosion. and a firefight began. abc news has learned, dykes fired on the agents first. they fired back. moments later, dykes was dead and little ethan was rushed from the bunker. >> in split-seconds, flash, bang, shoot, before mr. dykes would even have an opportunity to react. >> reporter: sources say that's exactly what fbi agents did,

rehearsing the raid just yards from where dykes was holding the boy. we flew above the scene tuesday. you can see the mock bunker the fbi built to train for different scenarios. >> you can practice breaching the door. you can practice having a camera inside. and ultimately design how you're going to assault this bunker. >> reporter: this morning, thanks to that raid, ethan is with his family. today is his sixth birthday. in a statement, his mother calls him, the most beautiful sight. saying, how incredible it is to hold him again. and this morning, little ethan appears to be back to normal. as we said, he's been watching one of his favorite programs, "spongebob squarepants." george? >> he's going to have some birthday. gio, thank you very much. >> we're so happy he's home. we have the latest on the shocking death of legendary american sniper and u.s. navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle. he was gunned down at a texas shooting range, allegedly by a

marine veteran he had been trying to help. authorities released the 911 call made just after that shooting. and abc's cecilia vega is here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. these 911 tapes are really chilling. you can hear the suspect's sister rushing to get out of her house. she says her brother admitted to the shooting at the range. and she was terrified he might turn on her next. >> listen. my brother just came by here. and he told me that he's committed a murder. >> reporter: laura blevins was terrified for her life. in just-released 911 tapes, she frantically says her brother, eddie routh, had showed up at her texas home saturday, and made a startling confession. >> he said that he killed two guys. they went to a shooting range. he's crazy. he's psychotic. i don't know if he's being honest with me. >> reporter: police say the 25-year-old former marine snapped, turning his gun on two men at shooting practice with him. men who had been trying to help counsel him. >> i don't know if he's going to come back here. >> okay.

>> i don't know if he's on drugs or not. >> reporter: investigators say routh shot point-blank former navy s.e.a.l. sniper, chris kyle, and his friend, 35-year-old chad littlefield, then stole kyle's pickup truck. >> i'm going to stay on the phone with you until you get here, okay? >> that would be great. >> reporter: unsure of what routh planned to do next, his sister headed for the police department. her husband took the phone. >> he was recently diagnosed with ptsd. >> okay. okay. >> and he's been acting a little weird. >> just got out of a mental hospital last week. >> reporter: routh now stands accused of taking the life of a war hero who was one of the country's most decorated snipers. routh's family is convinced the same illness they say he was being treated for is also what caused him to snap. >> now, that's not who he is. >> reporter: now, the alleged shooter remains in jail. a public memorial service is

planned on monday for kyle at cowboy stadium, amy. >> shows how much he was loved and revered by many. cecilia, thank you. looking at the latest on olympic gold medalist lindsey vonn. she is nursing a fractured knee after crashing on a super-g run in austria. the big question now, will she ever compete again? john muller is here with all the details. john, what a terrifying fall. >> reporter: it is one of the scariest moments in sports. america's golden girl of the slopes will have reconstructive surgery on her knee next week back here in the u.s. her father told the associated press, she is mad at the way things turned out. she landed in a clump of ice crystals. and that caused the fall. now, the process of surgery and rehab, as she races that clock for the 2014 olympics. she is leading at the top. and it's about to go horribly wrong. watch in slow-motion, as the blazing lindsey vonn, launches 500 feet down the course. she loses her balance in the air, catches her right knee on impact and slams face-first into the slope.

this morning. josh groban live right here. >> that is fantastic. can't wait for all of that. want to get now to the very latest on the breakup murder trial. jodi arias taking the stand for a second day revealing intimate details about her relationship with the victim. abc's ryan owens is in phoenix now with the very latest. ryan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. jodi arias likes to talk. we knew that because after she was arrested, she talked to police. she talked to reporters, and she lied to them all. welll, now she's talking to a new audience, a jury that could sentence her to death. >> did you ever meet an individual by the name of travis alexander? >> yes. >> reporter: on day two of her testimony, jodi arias finally told the jury about the moment she met the man she would later kill. she testified, travis alexander introduced himself at a las vegas convention, and they hit it off almost immediately. >> and he was staring at my lips

like he wanted to kiss me, but he didn't. >> reporter: it got more explicit from there. arias, walking the jury through their first intimate encounter. >> i felt apprehensive, but i was going with it. >> reporter: arias testified she never objected to any of alexander's advances. his sister sat stone-faced, as arias described their brother as the aggressor. she is trying to convince the jury she repeatedly stabbed and shot her ex-boyfriend in self-defense. >> did you kill travis alexander on june 4th, 2008? >> yes, i did. >> why? >> the simple answer is that he attacked me, and i defended myself. >> reporter: her testimony started with a bang monday. but she's been on the stand for more than five rambling hours now literally holding court. she's relived old relationships. >> i'm kind of like one guy at a time kind of person. >> reporter: recounted irrelevant details.

>> because he was from southern california, and those people like the chargers in that area. >> reporter: even laughed while on trial for murder. >> it's entertainment training. you know what i mean? it's entertaining training, i guess you could say. >> reporter: all the while the prosecutor is just sitting there taking notes. he looks like he's ready to pounce once he gets his chance on cross-examination, but he may have to wait a while, george. as we said, jodi arias likes to talk. >> we can see that. ryan, thanks. we're going to turn to the latest trouble for chris brown. prosecutors are going to court in l.a. today to claim that brown violated his probation after his 2009 attack on rihanna. they say he skipped out on community service, and abc's matt gutman is here with that. >> reporter: good morning, george. one of the allegations is that he didn't complete a single hour of community labor in his home district of virginia. and he wasn't in the state on some of the days he was supposed to be picking up trash.

the l.a. district attorney now wants him to redo hundreds of hours of community service, this time in l.a. chris brown, the bad boy crooner, please don't judge me, may not get his wish this morning. ♪ please don't judge me brown is slated to appear before a los angeles judge today after new allegations the singer didn't do over 1400 hours of community-focused labor he was ordered to perform in 2009. part of his sentence for pleading guilty to assaulting his then and current girlfriend, rihanna. >> the defendant, chris brown, must not harass, strike, threaten or otherwise -- >> reporter: at the time, richmond's police chief agreed to supervise brown doing tasks like cleaning up trash and removing graffiti. instead, the d.a. now says its investigation revealed no credible, competent, verifiable evidence he did any of the work saying the police

department, at best, kept, quote, sloppy documentation. and at worst, provided fraudulent reporting. >> and, in fact, if he didn't do these hours, the judge is going to give him a choice, either do it here in los angeles county so it can be verified or simply go to jail. >> reporter: among the allegations, that on days brown was supposed to be doing labor, he wasn't even in richmond. the d.a. says one day the singer was on a private jet, headed for cancun, where the singer reportedly posted these photos on his blog. brown's attorney, mark geragos, denies those allegations saying that brown didn't violate anything, wasn't on a plane to cancun and was always doing his work. they also cite several lengthy court run-ins brown has had since on parole. even a fight with singer frank ocean. and allegations he swiped a cell phone from a clubgoer last year. allegations that geragos also denies. the richmond police couldn't be reached for a comment. now, if the judge finds that chris brown broke his probation, it is possible he could force him to serve all those hours in

jail. george? >> okay, matt, thanks. let's get more on this from "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. lengthy filing right there. prosecutors put a lot of time in this. >> they're also going from california to virginia, sending investigators to question floor cleaners as to whether they were the ones that were actually cleaning the floors or chris brown cleaning the floors. there's no question they're spending more time on this case than they ordinarily night. on the other hand, prosecutors are all the time accused of letting celebrities off easy. so they're sort of stuck in a position where if they don't do enough, people will say, wait a second, he got away with it. and on the other hand, you have to say, is this worth the resources? >> meanwhile, brown's lawyers fighting back hard saying they want sanctions from the lawyers for doing this. >> that's not going to happen. mark geragos is a well-known lawyer. he knows how to respond in a high-profile case and the way to respond in a high-profile case is to attack the prosecutor. but the notion they would get

sanctions is a hollow threat. and, remember, geragos is specifically highlighted in the motion made by the prosecutor saying that he was coaching the lawyer for the richmond pd where he was serving the community service on how to answer questions. so geragos is also mentioned specifically in this motion. >> but it does seem like there's enough there to at least make brown do more service. >> we'll see. the fundamental question in my mind is not going to come down to these other incidents. it's not going to come down to the cell phone. it's not going to come down to anger management questions. it's going to come down to the question, did he serve the community service or didn't he? if he literally wasn't there and wasn't able to serve the community service, as he supposedly claimed he did, and signed off on, that's a big problem for him. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. >> let's go to sam. we're going to start with gorgeous days into the northeast, mid-atlantic. let's start with new york. wabc, number one in our hearts and also on your screens. a really nice shot this morning. and then, right down to washington, d.c., where the same situation is there.

so, we're thrilled and proud to be part of it. >> we've all seen you run in high heels before. i think we have the tape somewhere. there we go. you're in the park. and sam's done it with you once or twice, right? >> no, no, no. i've only watched. i did not run in high heels with kelly ripa. >> but going up to the top of the empire state building, how did you train? >> how did i train? i found out i was doing this a week ago. so, by training, i would say i ran up my -- my trainer lives in a building that has 30 flights of stairs. i ran up that one. >> that's pretty good. >> other than that, i carbo-loaded last night. >> kelly, running up 30 flights, how was that for you? >> it was horrible. i said to myself, i just want to -- i want someone to kidnap me so i don't have to do this. sam? >> kelly, i did this two years

no one should ever be judged by how deep their tan is. >> i know, right? i just wish they could look beyond the color of my tan and see the content of my closet. because i have really nice stuff in my closet. >> i know. and that's a beautiful dream. >> i mean, it did look like such a fun cast. and you have to play it so straight. how do you not crack up? >> no choice. i mean, sometimes we do. sometimes we laugh so hard. and the crew's sitting there. please. it was funny 20 minutes ago. but we just have a great time. and the writers are so talented. they write really funny things for us to say. >> can we talk about -- talking about funny. dallas' wardrobe. you squeeze into a lot of spandex. you have to work out what? five hours a day? >> no. it's so stupid. i do do a lot of squeezing. there's a lot of painful zipping going up on that show. it really takes a teen.

>> spray tan, too? >> a lot of spray tanning, too. i'm a very high-maintenance character. >> you grew up in florida. your mom and dad southerners. is that where you get your adorable southern accent? >> my mom lives in tallahassee still. my dad, they both live in florida. and my mom is real southern. and she likes sparkly things. and why in the world would anybody wear black? that's so depressing? >> she's going to make a comment today? >> she is. but she's going to like the lace. otherwise, i'd be in big trouble. >> i'm a huge fan of yours from "curb your enthusiasm." in fact, you act alongside my sister-in-law, elisabeth shue. one of the scenes when you were trying out for a part with jerry seinfeld. how great was it to work with a comedic legend like larry david? >> i know. i was really hard with larry because we were improvising. if you laughed during the scene, you would ruin the take.

i always bit the inside of my cheek. larry laughs all the time. if i laugh one second, you ruined the take. that's not fair. >> we're so excited that you found a new starring role in "suburgatory." thanks for being with us. you can see "suburgatory" tonight at 9:30, 8:30 central on abc. coming up, josh groban performs live. can't wait for that.

[ cheers and applause ] so very happy to have josh groban with us this morning. he's been making us laugh. he's been anchoring the news. and now, he will do what he does best. sing for us in a moment. but i want to talk to you about your new album. >> sure. >> i want to hear a little about the rock influence that sort of is creeping into your life. >> well, we made this album after we had been on the road for a good year. and so, we really had a very live energy on the road. and working with the amazing producer of this record, rob cavallo, who had had green day and a lot of brands. basically it was to bring the edge of a live show on to the record. it is not a rock record. but we liked the energy of that. we had fun. and weren't afraid to open up into new territories. >> you did a great interview, i thit was for "details."

and you talked about growing up in the grunge era. do you ever try to go to that direction? >> only at karaoke. that's when i have too much cough medicine and take on the pearl jam. my voice does not do grunge very well. when i was listening to that stuff as a kid, i would try to sing it. and it would come out the way i sound, which is ridiculous. >> so glad you're singing the way you are. >> me, too. it worked out all right. >> we've seen you host talk shows. you're acting. you're singing. is this still your first and most important passion? >> music will always be 100%. i wanted to sing since i was very little. the acting thing came about first because i was so interested in theater and musical theater. the fact that some of the comedic stuff has happened has been a surprise. >> you're so good. you're so funny. >> it's easy when you have props like this monopoly piece. we have this on the piano, now, for the song. >> everybody's waiting to hear and i want you to make you have
